Africa is a continent in conflict. Animism, Communism and Islam are in conflict with Christianity. The battle is for the soul of the continent.
Africa for Christ Many would be surprised, in the light of all the negative and violent reports, to hear that Africa is being saved. In 1900 there were 8 million Christians (10% of the entire population of Africa). By the year 2000 there were over 350 million (48% of the population of Africa). The growth of evangelicals has been even more spectacular. In 1900 evangelicals were 1,6 million (1.5% ). However, by 2000 there were 116 million (14.8%). The rapid church growth has been particularly impressive in Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

Books, reports and articles have been written; speeches have been made about the current crisis in Zimbabwe. But very few people have managed to get to the heart of the matter or root causes of the present dilemma. And it goes not without saying that there is no solution until we come to realize the root causes of our political and social crisis. The problem is that we have sinned against God as a nation. We have forsaken God’s moral laws in the bible.
“But if any nation does not listen, l will completely uproot and destroy it” declares the Lord, Jeremiah 12:17. Zimbabwe is now in a desperate and chaotic condition' Apart from the tyranny and the torture which grow daily. hunger stalks millions in the country. Commonplace items are often unobtainable. Maize, the staple diet, is indeed sometimes to be had on the black market, and is only belatedly and reluctantly being imported - with foreign help and in inadequate quantities. Sugar, cooking oil and the like are in desperately short supply. The public water supply and electric power frequently break down for long periods. Fuel (petrol etc) is often simply not to be had, 'in spite of the long and futile queues. Garbage is not collected. Inflation rockets. Britain, colonialism and the drought are blamed for everything, though people did not go hungry during Rhodesia's frequent droughts.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. ” Romans 12:2
Rebuilding Zimbabwe We have a vision to help rebuild the country of Zimbabwe. The only way to ensure stability for future generations is to build upon the only sure foundation of Biblical principles. After the economic depression and collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar, people are eager to embrace questionable quick-fix schemes and even heresies rather than life-transforming Biblical principles. Therefore, during our recent mission, we conducted Biblical Worldview Seminars in different towns in Zimbabwe addressing the battle that is fought to control the minds of people. Our worldview determines our values, it influences how we think, and therefore guides how we live. Our conduct is a result of our worldview. A person may feel like a Christian, while he thinks like a humanist. “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. “ Colossians 2:8 “Half the admissions end up in the mortuary.” Doctors in Zimbabwe have sounded an alert that patients are dying unnecessarily because of lack of medical supplies.
“There is no liquid paracetamol, no materials for dressings, no burn cream, no antiseptics, no drips, no surgical gloves, limited antibiotics. All these are required and need to be purchased by family members that can barely afford to survive on a daily basis. No sterile burn environment for burn victims, ward curtains are torn, windows are broken, sheets are worn, the food (when available) is supplied but without nourishment (over the last four weeks patients have been fed a small portion of sadza/rice with cabbage boiled in salt water). Children that are malnourished are being sent home to die as the required protein formula is unavailable. X-rays are unable as there is no film…there has been no food provided to patients for six days. Those without families to provide food – go hungry! Daily the nurses suffer heartache as they watch helplessly as patients, particularly, children, die unnecessarily! Constant frustration of not being able to put their knowledge into practice due to the lack of medical supplies can only be disheartening….” Zimbabwe is at a crossroads. What was once a bread basket of Africa, exporting food, became a basket case, with millions starving. 28 years of misrule by Marxist Robert Mugabe resulted in the greatest unemployment (85%), the highest inflation (over 2 million%) and the lowest life expectancy (31 years) in the world. More than half of the population have fled the country.
How does one begin to rebuild a country that has been so thoroughly ruined? This is the challenge that we as Christians must respond to. It is imperative that Christians worldwide unite in prayer and action - to ensure that the long-suffering people of Zimbabwe are freed from the tyranny which has oppressed them for so long. The ongoing violence in Iraq has caused observers to reflect on the challenges of bringing democracy to tribal societies. Before the Iraq War was launched in 2003, the Bush administration assured Americans and the world that the removal of Saddam Hussein would result in the creation of a peaceful, well-governed, and democratic society. But it is now becoming clear that building a successful democracy is not as easy as many Americans had assumed. Pure democracy is a system that works well in particular cultures, and not all cultures are equally capable of building harmonious democratic societies. “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them - those who are mistreated - since you yourselves are in the body also.” Hebrews 13:3
Many Zimbabweans in this long-suffering country have watched their homes and churches bulldozed and burned by Mugabe's army and police. People are dying of starvation in a man-made famine. Vast herds of cattle and wildlife have been slaughtered. Crops and stores burned. Many people beaten or murdered. 5000 of productive farms have been looted by government organised mobs. With over 15000km travelled on our mission trip to and from Zambia, the need to stay alert on the roads was evident. Overturned trucks on the sides of the roads and huge potholes eating away at the tar, makes one all the more cautious when travelling. While travelling through Zimbabwe we were in the process of overtaking an 18 wheel truck when two of their tires exploded! Thankfully God's hand of protection was on us and we managed to come away unharmed. Despite the far distances travelled, four border crossings, going through rocky, sandy and rough terrain, our faithful vehicle brought us home, which, in itself is an answer to prayer.
The next time animal rights and enviro-cranks get in your face about ancient trees or “endangered” fairy shrimp, ask them why they’re silent about this massive slaughter:
Those are the words of Dr. Peter Hammond, founder and director of Frontline Fellowship. His headquarters are in South Africa, but his Christian missionary work takes him across the continent.Vast herds of elephant and the endangered Black Rhino, cheetah, leopard and antelope have been snared, speared, shot or blown-up. Huge forests have been destroyed and entire game reserves have been devastated. Some of the greatest game reserves in Africa have been in Zimbabwe. Now these wildlife sanctuaries are the scenes of unprecedented slaughter. |
